CHAPTER TWELVE

“Ambrosius began teaching others with magic long before he finished his writings that comprise the lost Ancient’s Grimoire. He began instructing other young men before he had the thirteen stages of magehood in mind or written.

“Excerpts of letters and other materials from his followers indicate regrets about teaching these things after he established the stages of magehood. It is not clear why he regretted this beyond his conviction that he’d ‘doomed mankind.’ Any events that may have preceded this judgment are unclear. Many people in this field of study suspect Ambrosius was betrayed or one of his followers obtained too much power.”

Thea checked her watch for about the seventh time in the past hour.

“Looking at the time won’t make it go faster,” Jax grumbled from the other side of the van where he sat. They’d been stuck inside the surveillance van all morning, waiting to see if anyone emerged from the rundown house. No sign of anyone entering or exiting, even by the magic passageway. Thea kept her magical senses on high alert and would know about any movement.

Thea muttered something incoherent in reply, then reached for her phone. Kira, in cat form, yawned beside her. At least Kira could sleep all day if she wanted. Thea scrolled through spam email notifications, a text from Mia wishing her luck, and a slew of messages from a group chat for her class at college. Nothing from Brandon yet.

She wanted to know if he’d gotten anyone to help, AID or the coven. She had no doubt Claire would. It was her coven Mother they had to worry about.

Thea hadn’t bothered considering what they would have to do if Michelle Folsom chose not to help. She tossed her phone away and met Jax’s eyes. “I know Brandon said we shouldn’t exert ourselves in case the ritual starts and we need to jump into action.”

Jax lifted a brow. “But?”

“But if I project myself into the lake realm over this place, I might be able to see more of what is going on.” She gestured absently toward the house.

Jax considered this. “Going into the lake realm exhausts you.”

“So does sitting here waiting for the hammer to fall!”

Kira’s ears perked up, and she lifted her head, her eyes meeting Thea’s. Thea grinned. “Kira thinks I should do it.”

Jax narrowed his eyes at the cat. “Is she bored, too?”

He has no idea, Kira told Thea.

“I only looked around briefly last night because I’d exerted myself fighting those zombies,” Thea explained. “I’ll be fine to take a peek now. It won’t take long.”

Finally, Jax relented. Brandon had put him in charge until he came back. Jax doubted his authority meant much, though. Thea would always find a way to convince him to let her do whatever the hell she wanted. “Be careful,” he reminded her.

“Aren’t I always?” She flashed him a smile as she got onto the van floor, crossing her legs. She closed her eyes, and Kira curled up in her lap to help her with a magic boost.
